What is a VIN?

The VIN is the "Vehicle Identification Number" for your Nissan. The number specifies different components on your vehicle such as engine size, body style, model year, transmission type, color and so forth. Any vehicle newer than 1980, will have a 17 digit alphanumeric number.

Where to Find VIN Numbers?

Commonly you can find your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is on a small metal plate attached to the driver side top of the dashboard. Every Nissan is required to have a VIN. It is illegal to remove or change this plate. If the tag is missing, chances are the vehicle has been repaired, or was most likely, stolen.

  • Is this a safety recall?

    A. This is a safety recall. A stop sale is in effect.
  • What is the reason for safety recall?

    A. We noticed a supplier quality issue. The mechanical binding may cause the secondary hood latch to stay open. The secondary hood latch may not hold properly if the primary latch is inadvertently released while the vehicle is in motion.
  • What can happen if my car is affected?

    A. On some of the affected vehicles, if a customer inadvertently actuates the hood release (located next to the fuel filler door release on the lower part of the dashboard), the secondary hood latch may not hold the hood latch closed as designed and the hood may come open while vehicle is in motion.
  • How do I get my car fixed for this recall?

    A. Our dealership will replace the hood latch and confirm secondary latch engagement.
  • What makes this recall different than the last?

    A. Nissan has revised the previous recall with a new remedy. To ensure your safety and satisfaction, we are asking affected owners to make an appointment with our service department to have this updated repair completed on their vehicle. This repair should be completed even if the previous recall was performed.
  • How long will it take to fix the recall?

    A. At Gray Daniels Nissan Brandon, free for parts and labor, should take less than 1 hour to complete. However, it may require your vehicle for a longer period of time based upon our work schedule.
  • Is a rental car provided while the vehicle is being serviced?

  • When will vehicle owners be notified?

    A. Letters via U.S. Mail will be sent to affected owners on February 15th, 2016
  • Are parts readily available?

    A. Our dealership will be receiving multiple shipments starting January 27th. Please call ahead of time to verify.
  • Can the hood open while driving if the primary hood latch is engaged?

    A. No. There are not any problems with the main hood latch. This condition will only occur if you inadvertently open the primary hood latch by pulling the hood release lever. In this case, the secondary hood latch may not be engaged which could allow the hood to open while driving.
  • Is there anything owners can do to prevent the condition?

    A. Owners can inspect the hood to confirm that it is fully closed and latched.
  • Is my Altima safe to drive?

    A. Yes, but you should contact Gray-Daniels Nissan Brandon as soon as possible to have your vehicle inspected if you receive an owner notification letter indicating your vehicle is potentially affected. We recommend that you check to ensure the hood is fully closed and latched. Also, we ask that you be careful to pull the fuel door release lever when refueling, and not the hood release lever.
  • How much will the repair cost?

    A. The repair will be performed for the customer free of charge for parts and labor.
  • Where can I have my car fixed for this recall?

    A. The repair will ensure the secondary hood latch is operating as designed. As the correct operating condition will be confirmed, there is no basis for repurchasing or replacing your vehicle.
